With lockdown having been extended for another three weeks at least, no doubt you’re all starting to feel the bite of self-isolation and social distancing, and no doubt you’re all dreaming of a time when you can hop on a plane once again and head off to parts unknown. But just because you can’t set off on your next big trip right now doesn’t mean that you can’t plan it - and with all the time you have on your hands at the moment, you’re sure to be able to plan the perfect trip, leaving nothing out… and getting you even more excited for the end of lockdown in the process.
If you’re struggling with your choice of destination, you might want to put Greece at the very top of the list. The country is home to some incredible sights and is the perfect choice of destination for history buffs and culture vultures… you may never want to go home again.
There’s the Acropolis in Athens, of course, which you absolutely must see and make sure you leave enough time to explore the museum thoroughly as well. And if it’s museums you’re after, the open-air island museum on Delos is a must-visit as well, which is home to clay figures, mosaics, jewellery, pottery, statues… it’s got the lot and fresh air and sunshine into the bargain! Then you must make your way to Thessaloniki, where you’ll find some incredible Byzantine monuments that you won’t forget in a hurry. And the Palace of Knossos is a must as well, a serious highlight in Crete, just south of Heraklion. Anyone interested in myths and legends will find this particular holiday hotspot fascinating.
But it’s not just history you’ll find in Greece - anyone with a serious interest in food will love a holiday in this particular part of the world. The Daily Telegraph recently counted down some of the best places for gastronomes to consider, including Santorini for cooking classes, and Andros and Tinos for traditional food and lots of workshops. And, of course, Greece is a great choice of destination for anyone who loves to spend time outside being as active as possible. The country has everything from rugged mountainscapes to stunning beaches, lakes, forests, green valleys… you’ll have a wonderful time exploring it from top to bottom.
You’ll never find yourself without something to do in Greece and you’ll find yourself wanting to return time and time again.
